9th BUDAPEST ARCHITECTURE FILM DAYS | GREETINGS
Contemporary architecture and design on the screen for 4-days within the framework of the 9th edition of the Budapest Architecture Film Days. The Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre invites you for a 4-day-long cinematic journey between 2-5 March at Toldi Cinema, Budapest. In a similar fashion to previous years, the festival presents a wide selection of films, focusing on storytelling and personal relationships with the city, presenting buildings in an elusive and subjective manner.
The festival distinguishes itself as the first and biggest architecture-related film festival of Central Europe. Disappearing old neighbourhoods, renamed streets, new districts, the conflicts and contrasts of the street or the newly found multiculturalism of Central European cities – all provide a sharp lens to interpret social changes. The selection does not only offer new viewpoints to look at these changes, they also help our understanding of urban transformation and architectural processes in the region.
Step out of your confront zone! This year’s films also aim to present unusual solutions for urban conflict resolution; awareness-raising approaches able to go beyond traditional frontlines, seeking cooperation and resilience.
Is architecture capable of creating collective happiness? The opening film of the festival, The Infinite Happiness seeks to answer this eternal question. The latest addition to the cult series Living Architectures is a fascinating portrait of 8 House by Bjarke Ingels Group.
The following days include the story of the unique conversion process of the infamous Parisian residential tower nicknamed ‘Alcatraz’, the city of the ‘Made in China’ phenomenon, and the story of the famous art schools of Castro’s Cuba. For the lovers of architecture, the festival offers exciting episodes from the lives of visionary masters such as Eero Saarinen, Frei Otto, and his student Zaha Hadid.
The programme is not limited to the genre of documentary.
The stunning imagery of the German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz’s three-part experimental film series Decampment of Modernism showcases modernist architecture in a unique way. The trilogy will be shown together for the first time in Hungary, accompanied by a presentation of the director.
The selection includes a number of feature films where architecture is not only the background, but protagonist. The cinematic version of J. G. Ballard’s dystopian novel High-Rise will be shown alongside Romanian director Cristi Puiu’s latest film Sieranevada, a domestic drama locked in the confined space of a flat in a residential complex in Bucharest.
As in previous years, screenings are accompanied by discussions and parties.
Do you live in a building? Do you love cinema? Then let us meet during the first weekend of March in Budapest!
